Setsu & Shinobu Ito – biography

Setsu and Shinobu Ito, born and educated in Japan, have lived and worked together in Milan since 1997.

Setsu Ito was born in 1964 in Yamaguchi in southern Japan and graduated in design and architecture from the University of Tsukuba. He moved to Milan in 1989 and for six years gained work experience at the practices of Alessandro Mendini and Angelo Mangiarotti.

Shinobu Ito was born in 1966 in Tokyo and graduated in Textile Design at Tama Art University where she explored the structural and three-dimensional aspects of fabrics. From 1988 to 1995 she worked with a creative team at the R&D centre of multinational CBS-Sony. In 1995 they opened their own design studio as consultants for major international companies and won awards including The Young & Design Award 1999 (Italy), The Good Design Award 2001 (Japan), The Toyama Product Design Award 2001 (Japan), ADI Design Index 2001, 2005 (Italy) and Compasso d’Oro Award 2011 (Italy).

Some of their projects feature in the permanent collections at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and Die Neue Sammlung International Design Museum in Munich.
