Ceramic tiles in residential applications

by Valentina Pellati

Ceramic tiles for residential applications have made enormous progress in terms of both technical characteristics and aesthetic qualities. The clearest indication of this development is the growing use of these products throughout the home. This is particularly evident in the living room, a continuous or semi-continuous space that combines socialisation and dining areas and, increasingly, also the kitchen. Stability, shock resistance and chemical resistance, versatility of sizes and trim pieces, the infinite range of decorative patterns, simplicity of installation (tiles of very low thickness are now available for installation over existing floors) are all characteristics that make ceramic tiles one of the most popular materials for both new build and renovation projects. As a result, large-format porcelain and single fired floors tiles featuring splendid reproductions of stone, wood, fabric and metal have become very popular in urban residences and up-market homes, frequently winning major awards.
